This capacity development (CD) project, financed by the Data for Decisions (D4D) Fund, was initiated in response to a request from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to provide technical assistance (TA) on developing a Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG). The project aimed to establish a robust MIEG compilation framework aligned with the International Monetary Fund’s Quarterly National Accounts Manual (2017), enhancing timeliness and quality of economic statistics. Key findings include the successful creation of a Value Added Tax (VAT) database critical for compiling both MIEG and quarterly GDP estimates, alongside training on data cleaning tools that improve data accuracy. The project revealed some discrepancies between MIEG and quarterly GDP figures, highlighting the need for
harmonization. Recommendations focus on the phased adoption of the new VAT processing files, timely dissemination of experimental MIEG data, and closer integration of MIEG with quarterly GDP compilation to improve consistency and statistical quality.
