Summary

Austria is a prosperous and stable economy. However, it has structurally weak growth which has been compounded by the pandemic, Russia’s war in Ukraine, monetary tightening, and weak German demand. The resulting recession was cushioned by fiscal support, but debt rose sharply, triggering the EU’s Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP) in 2025. Despite a modest recovery, the outlook is again clouded by a rise in energy costs. This context and challenging political landscape narrows the window for reforms.
